November 22, 1998 Windows 98 OSR Beta 1 CD Key Fix Sunday, Nov. 22 - 6:55 PM EST Dave Brombaugh, a Microsoft employee, has posted a fix on the Microsoft newsgroups to the invalid CD key problem. Apparently the first 5 letters of the CD keys are the source of the problems. We cannot post the correct 5 letters, so please visit the Microsoft newsgroups. The following newsgroups on the Microsoft server have the message:

For those of you who don't know, eFX is a program the applies skins to the title bars of Windows 95/98/NT. This makes the whole look of the operating system customizable! It turns out Microsoft made a mistake and testers' should change the first 5 characters to C9TCH. Also, Office 2000 CD keys will work on the Windows 98 OSR Beta 1 setup. This may be a bit too late for testers with a formatted hard drive, staring at the CD key screen with an invalid key error. MotherBoard Monitor Version 3.75 and 1.11 Lite Sunday, Nov. 22 - 11:30 AM EST Alex van Kaam has released a new version of MotherBoard Monitor, a great utility to report voltages, fan speeds, and temperatures. New in this release is:

Many testers have been wondering why the CD Key's mailed to them don't work, after the 114 meg download. Well it turns out, none of the keys work at all. Testers probably won't receive new keys until Tuesday, so we may have to wait a bit to get any feedback on the release. On a related note, the build number of Windows 98 OSR Beta 1 is 4.10.2106, which puts it only slightly higher than the second Service Pack 1 release a few weeks ago, 4.10.2098. There will be a lot of similarities between the two because they are basically updating the exact same things. Current Windows 98 users won't have to worry about downloading a complete new release if they do not wish to do so. They will be able to separately install all of the same updates that are included in the OSR package via Windows Update. Users who get Service Pack 1, Internet Explorer 5.0 and DirectX 6.1 separately, will have the same upgrades as those who install the OSR from scratch. The OSR will be mostly for computer manufacturers, hence the name OEM Service Release. It is much easier for computer manufacturers to ship the new version, than to tell their customers to download all of the updates when they get home. This is where we see the major advantage of Windows Update and why it has become so important. It has removed the necessity of getting an entirely new operating system for a few software updates. Matrox Overclock Version 2.0.8a Sunday, Nov. 22 - 3:00 AM EST Brian Galm of BGR Sofware has released Matrox Overclock Version 2.0.8a, a great graphics tweaking utility. New in version 2.0.8a include:

At around 12:00am EST, Microsoft sent notification to all Windows B 98 OSR testers that Beta 1 was available for download. The OSR release of Windows 98 B will be a full new release containing the Service Pack we have been reporting on and many new features. Here is an overview of the big changes:
We will also see many of the Service Pack 1 updates, including:
CD's will be shipped to testers for those who don't want to download it. The core install without the tour or online services is about 114 MB, which is only about 10 MB bigger than the original Windows 98 release. It will be interesting to see what has progressed and changed. We will keep you up to date with the latest developments and releases, so keep checking back. IE Java Removal Official Saturday, Nov. 21 - 11:14 PM EST As we reported earlier, Sun Microsystems won a court order against Microsoft giving them 90 days to change their Java in Internet Explorer for all systems, including Macintosh and Unix. Yesterday, Microsoft sent a letter to their IE licensees explaining what would happen with these two versions of IE. Here's a snippet: "Internet Explorer 4.x for the Macintosh and for Unix will be re-released without a Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. Instead, users will be directed to the virtual machine already available on the host operating systems" Microsoft was also quick to point out that this change will not affect the consumers at all. The change will be completely invisible to all end users. Enlightenment For Windows? Saturday, Nov. 21 - 8:38 PM EST I just finished talking to Lone Runner, the creator of LiteStep about a new shell he has been working on. He and rOn, from K-Jofol fame, have been creating an Enlightenment shell for Windows. Instead of the normal E (Enlightenment) ports we see, this is more of a re-write of E to function under Windows. It will be as customizeable as the original and will load standard E themes, so the only difference will be in Windows specific functions like the taskbar. It will also support the same virtual desktops as Linux. For those of you running LiteStep and can't do without certain modules, it will also run LiteStep modules. Currently, the new shell has no name, as Lone Runner is awaiting permission from Rasterman to use the name 'Enlightenment', however no matter what name he gives it, you should check it out. No release date is set yet, but it should be available to the public in a few weeks. We will keep you updated on its progress. Take a sneak peak at the new shell Planet Iridium Beta Build #90 Saturday, Nov. 21 - 6:50 PM EST Planet Iridium Build #90 has been posted to the Planet Iridium website. It offers some easy to understand information about how the bug can affect you and why you should patch it. Check it out. Microsoft offers patch for IE security hole Change In Plans For DirectX Wednesday, Nov. 18 - 4:20 PM EST We decided to post this because of the barrage of e-mails we have received about this matter. Earlier this year, when DirectX 6 shipped to testers, it was announced that DirectX testers would receieve a copy of Windows NT 5.0 Beta 2 and a copy of Windows NT 5.0 Final. However, Beta 2 came and went, never arriving on tester's doorsteps and left them wondering what was going on. After growing concern about when they'd see Windows NT 5.0 (renamed to Windows 2000), testers have been asking what's going on and now Microsoft has replied - not in favor of testers. In an announcement today, the Microsoft DirectX Team stated that all current DirectX testers will receive an interim build of Windows 2000, however no estimated time of arrival has been set. The build will probably be somewhere between Beta 2 and Beta 3, so it shouldn't be too long before they ship it out. On the downside, Microsoft also stated that with a change in policy, DirectX testers will not recieve a copy of Windows 2000 Final. This is in no way the DirectX Team's fault, as it is the Windows 2000 Team's decision. If testers want to try out the final version, they will have to fork over the cash and buy it. variant.
